If the route is constrained, compare a shallower wall solution or keep the floor clear.

Map the entrance with doors fully open
Measure the clear wall run, the hallway at its narrowest point and any skirting or projecting trim. Mark the full sweep of the entrance door and nearby cupboards. Add door handles and a coat hanging from the intended hook. Measuring between walls alone misses objects that will occupy that route during normal use. Keep these movement areas on the same sketch as the proposed bench.
Compare the bench closed, occupied and open
Use removable tape for the closed outline, then mark the additional area used by baskets, drawers or a raised lid. Rehearse a person sitting and standing without leaving a box in the route. The worksheet calculates the remaining dimensions for a simple rectangular layout. Inspect the real shape afterward: an angled door or projecting leg can invalidate a neat rectangle.
Measure the shoes before choosing cubbies
Arrange the daily shoes as they are actually left, including boots and the widest pair. Record depth, width and height, then compare the usable cubby opening rather than the bench's outside width. A compartment divided into three equal bays may waste room if one pair needs much more width. Choose open access or baskets based on the household's repeated behavior, not only which version looks tidier.
Test comfortable seating rather than choosing a standard height
Use a chair or bench the intended person already finds comfortable for putting on shoes. Compare its finished seat height, including any cushion, with the candidate. Check whether the person can sit and stand with a bag or coat nearby. A comfortable height for one adult does not establish suitability for another user. Verify that the model is intended for seating and follow its stated load and assembly instructions.
Keep wet-weather items separate from closed storage
Plan where wet shoes, umbrellas and damp outerwear go without collecting water inside the bench. Use a suitable removable tray if needed and check that it does not extend into the door path. Let items dry under their care instructions before enclosing them. A soft cushion beside dripping coats may add maintenance rather than solve it.
Check delivery, assembly and any required anchoring
Compare packaged dimensions with the doorway, stairs and turning points. Check whether the lid or drawers can be assembled in the intended position and whether the manufacturer's instructions require fixing the unit. Do not treat a bench with a tall attached coat rack as equivalent to a low seat. Verify the mounting or anti-tip instructions for the exact product and wall before purchase.
Decide what to keep near the door
Give the entrance a capacity based on current daily use. Store seasonal shoes and spare bags elsewhere when they crowd the bench. At the end of a normal week, check whether shoes return to the storage, the seat stays available and the route stays clear. A key ledge and permitted wall hooks may be the better final decision if the bench introduces an obstacle.
